Tell Council to make Coonan Street at Keating safer to cross

We’re calling on Brisbane City Council to install a pedestrian crossing over Coonan St near the intersection with Keating Street.

We’re calling on Brisbane City Council to install a pedestrian crossing over Coonan St near the intersection with Keating Street.

The hugely expensive and disruptive Moggill Rd/ Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade barely considered pedestrian and cycling routes, and this crossing is a great example.
Pedestrians crossing Coonan Street from Keating Street to Indooroopilly Shopping Centre cross one lane of southbound traffic and then stop on the concrete island in the middle of the road.

In most cases, islands like this are located to separate traffic travelling in opposite directions.  Pedestrians are used to looking for cars in one direction on each side of the traffic island.
However, at this intersection, once you get to the traffic island, there’s still cars coming from both directions.

Because this is so unusual, people crossing here don’t realise they still need to look both ways after getting to the island. This is causing near misses when people cross the road.
We’re calling for the Council to install additional safety measures - ideally a pedestrian crossing, but at minimum adequate signage - to make pedestrians aware of the issue so they can cross safely.

Even though this isn’t a formal crossing, Council can’t ignore the fact that the traffic island is frequently used by pedestrians and - without improvements - is a disaster waiting to happen. We just need a strong community response to demonstrate how important this is.
